My 1st Custom WordPress Theme DesignA few months ago a friend of mine came to me and asked if I knew anyone who could create a “custom WordPress theme design” that would match his business website almost identically. With nearly 10 years as a professional web designer behind me I was sure that I could help him. I’d installed these WordPress, Joomla and Drupal wysiwyg and cms “blogs” hundreds of times. This was going to be easy! Besides, it was ME that build his website. |

As you can see here I was successful.
However, looking back I have to admit that I was dead wrong. It wasn’t nearly as easy as I thought it was going to be. For starters I had to build a new template completely from scratch, which sounds a lot simpler than it was. The first problem I had was adding the Java applet to the header of the new custom WordPress theme design template that I was creating.
And as if this wasn’t causing me enough headaches already, the oh so wonderful javascript that I used to create the mouseover effects on his menu buttons did not want to work no matter what I tried.
Now all I had to do was edit the css on the stylesheet and I was home free. As I’m sure you’ve already guessed that was a lot easier said then done, especially my first time around, but I was determined to get this done and give my friend exactly what he wanted.
Some lessons you just have to learn the hard way.
I learned a lot in that 3 day period. The first thing I learned was that I must’ve been out of my mind when I’d told him not to worry about it and offered to do the job for $50 telling him….”no problem buddy, I’ve got this”. What was I thinking ? ! ? ! ? And even worse than that I was so sure it would be quick and easy.
Oh wait, now I remember. I had it in my head that I could just post my friend’s project on Elance, Scriptlance or one of the many other freelance websites out there and get some guy in India, the Philippines or even someone from Fiji to do this job for $30 – $35 an actually make a small profit. Wrong again!

The estimates I was getting were more like $150 – $300 for what we needed.
* Even the so called cheap custom WordPress theme design companies wanted $77 to $97 for a basic template and I’d never heard of them! I was too scared to send off an email and ask how much more they would want to help me get the Java applett and javascript working so that the new blog would have nearly the exact same look and feel as the original website.
Lesson #2 – People Need An Affordable Custom WordPress Theme Design
In my quest to build a new blog for my friend I was fortunate enough to meet and interact with some truly wonderful people. Each person left me new pieces of the puzzle, bits of information and links that I used to slowly put together an easier way to create dyamic scalable custom WordPress theme design layouts.
